When I moved to Vancouver in 1987, I was impressed by the cleanliness of our City. At that time, it was unusual to see even a gum wrapper on a sidewalk or street. Over the years, and most noticeably since the last 2 City Garbage Strikes, it appears that the public attitude has changed, evidenced by Litter - lots and lots of it!  As a concerned citizen, I have had many conversations with City of Vancouver officials about the growing epidemic of Litter, and have recently been informed that street sanitation is one of the areas being hit by this year’s budget cuts.  As my neighborhood of False Creek has been "construction central" for the past 4 years, the amount of trash and litter left in our neighborhood by construction workers has become devastating.  Fed up and frustrated, I decided that I could make a difference, so, I have made the commitment to take a garbage bag with me on walks to the grocery store, and pick up some Litter. What is surprising is that on every trip, I can easily pick up a full bag of discarded coffee cups, food wrappers, newspapers, etc. in a distance of less than 2 blocks. It is my hope to lead by example, and maybe things will change. I do know that many, many citizens feel the same way that I do. If you are sick of the Litter too, pick up a little today.
